Nevada, specifically
No income tax, and the Commerce Tax starts far above freelance scale.
Nevada has no personal income tax, which is why the state line above reads zero. Nevada does levy a Commerce Tax, and the Department of Taxation applies it to businesses whose Nevada gross revenue exceeds $4,000,000 in a fiscal year. It reaches sole proprietorships, not only corporations and partnerships, and the department exempts businesses below that threshold. For almost every self employed service vendor the answer is therefore no, which is worth knowing rather than guessing at.
- The threshold is $4,000,000 of Nevada gross revenue in a fiscal year. Below it, the department treats the business as exempt.
- The tax reaches sole proprietorships as well as corporations and partnerships.
- Nevada's fiscal year ends June 30 and the return falls due 45 days after that.
