Sign in & account access

BookNox has no passwords. You sign in with a link BookNox emails you, so there is nothing to reset or forget. This article covers how the link works and what to do when it does not.

Signing in

Returning vendors click Sign In in the site header (booknox.com/login). New vendors use any Build your quote page button (booknox.com/start), which runs the same flow with a get started framing. Either way, enter your email and BookNox sends a link from hello@booknox.com. The link works once and lasts 15 minutes, and opening it for a new address creates your account.

Why do I have to click a second button?

The BookNox sign in link in your email opens a short page titled One click to continue with a Sign in to BookNox button. Some email security scanners, such as Microsoft's Safe Links, check the links in an email before it reaches your inbox. If the link signed you in directly, a scan like that could use up your single use link before you ever saw it. The extra click is what makes the link survive those scanners.

Where you land after signing in

BookNox sends you to onboarding until Stripe is connected and at least one pricing catalog is saved, and to your dashboard every time after that, whichever door you came through.

Sign in error messages

The sign in page explains any problem with the link you used:

  • That link expired: more than 15 minutes passed. Request a new one.
  • That link has already been used: each link works once. Request a new one.
  • That link isn't valid, or We couldn't read that link: the link was incomplete or altered. Request a new one.
  • Too many attempts: wait a minute and try again.
  • This account is currently unavailable: the account is suspended or closed; contact support@booknox.com if you believe that is a mistake.
  • We couldn't complete your signup: email support@booknox.com and a person will help.

What if the email never arrives?

If the sign in email never arrives, check your spam or junk folder for a message from hello@booknox.com, and make sure you typed the same address you signed up with. Then request another link. A new link does not cancel an earlier unused one, so whichever arrives first works.

Sign in link requests are rate limited to stop abuse. One network can request 3 links a minute and 10 an hour, and one email address gets at most 5 links an hour; beyond that the form still says a link was sent, but no further email goes out until the hour passes. If you have requested several links with no luck, wait an hour, check the address, and try once more.

Refused email addresses

The BookNox sign in form refuses temporary inbox services with the message Please use a permanent email address. Your sign in address is the only way into your account and the address your clients' replies and notices reach, so it needs to be one that will still exist next year.

Can I open the link on another device?

Yes, a sign in link works in any browser on any device, and you end up signed in on the device where you clicked it. That is handy when you request the link on a laptop and read your email on a phone, as long as you then work on the phone, or request a fresh link from the laptop.

How long a sign in lasts

A BookNox sign in lasts 30 days on the browser you signed in on. Sign out from the dashboard menu at any time. If you are signed in somewhere you do not recognize, open Settings and use Sign out everywhere else in the Account security section: every other session ends at once, and the one you are using stays signed in.

Keeping sign in links safe

Each sign in link is a long random code that works once and expires after 15 minutes, and BookNox stores only a scrambled version of it. Treat sign in emails like keys: do not forward them. If you receive one you did not request, ignore it; the link expires on its own and no account is created.

A BookNox account has one sign in email and no separate team logins, so whoever can read that inbox can sign in. Keep the inbox itself secure, and use Sign out everywhere else if you ever suspect someone else signed in.

Links that open in another browser

Email apps sometimes open links in their own built in browser. If you sign in there, you stay signed in only inside that app. To sign in to your usual browser instead, copy the link into it: the email prints the full link under the button for exactly this. On a shared computer, sign out from the dashboard menu when you finish.

When you need a new link

A new sign in link is only needed on a new browser, after you sign out, or when the 30 days run out. Until then you stay signed in on that browser, and signing out of one browser does not affect the others.

Changing your sign in email

BookNox Settings has no field for changing your sign in email. If your address needs to change, write to support@booknox.com from the current address and say which address should replace it.
